Chúc Thánh Pagoda, formally known as Chúc Thánh Tự, was originally built during the Lý dynasty. It was located in Hồ Khẩu ward, Phụng Thiên district, in ancient Thăng Long, and is now situated at No. 7, Alley 370, Thụy Khuê Street, Bưởi Ward, Tây Hồ District.
The pagoda was constructed early in the Lê dynasty during the 18th century and is situated on an ancient land with a rich history spanning hundreds of years. This land is closely associated with the historical traditions of resistance against foreign invaders during the nation's founding. Chúc Thánh Pagoda is one of the oldest historical relics in Vietnam, with architectural traces and artifacts that still bear strong imprints of its historical period. The pagoda is dedicated to the worship of Buddha and Mother Goddess, where villagers seek blessings. It serves as a spiritual and cultural center for the local community, a place where people from all walks of life come to pray for good fortune, while also preserving the beautiful customs and traditions of the local people.
In the past, the pagoda occupied a fairly large area, including gardens and a pond. Known for its picturesque landscape and legendary sacredness, it became a site for significant religious rituals. In the year Mậu Ngọ (1618), during a severe drought in Hà Đông, officials from the royal court accompanied Lord Trịnh Tùng to the pagoda to perform a rain-seeking ritual, which proved effective. As a result, in the year Canh Thân (1620), Lord Trịnh Tùng issued a royal decree granting gold and silver to the pagoda and restoring ten plots of land that had originally belonged to the pagoda but had been seized by powerful individuals.
The layout of Chúc Thánh Pagoda consists of several main structures: the Three-entrance gate, the pagoda courtyard, and the main temple, which includes the Front hall and Main Hall. These structures are enclosed by walls, creating a distinct space that enhances the solemnity of this ancient pagoda.
