Vọng Thị Communal House is located in Võng Thị Village, Bưởi Ward, Tây Hồ District, Hanoi. Its name, Võng Thị Communal House, comes from the name of the village, but it is actually the Sùng Khánh Temple, also known as the Temple of Grand Preceptor Mục.
The Tây Hồ Chronicle under the section on Temples states:
“Grand Preceptor Mục, named Thận, was a native of Võng Thị Village. In his early life, he was a renowned Taoist priest. During the reign of King Lý Nhân Tông, Grand Chancellor Lê Văn Thịnh learned supernatural arts. In the Thái Ninh era, while accompanying the royal entourage on an excursion to Dâm Đàm Lake, a disturbance occurred in the middle of the lake, alarming the royal dragon boat. Mục Thận, disguised as a fisherman stationed along the shore, immediately launched a small boat to cast a net and capture the tiger—who turned out to be Grand Chancellor Lê. Upon returning, Lê was imprisoned and later exiled to the Đà River. The king then issued a decree appointing Mục Thận as ‘General Defender of the Nation’ (Phụ quốc tướng quân) and bestowed upon him the title of Grand Preceptor (Thái úy), along with that very lake as a fief. A temple was established in the village to honor him. Not long after, he passed away.”
The communal house is built in the shape of the Chinese character Đinh (丁). The front ceremonial hall consists of three compartments with gable-end walls and is made of concrete designed to resemble wood. The rear sanctum also has three compartments and was recently rebuilt. The temple does not contain many worship artifacts.
A unique feature of Võng Thị Communal House is its collection of valuable ancient stone steles. Among them is a stele titled “Stele of the Grand Preceptor’s Estate for Ancestral Worship,” created in the third year of the Vĩnh Tộ era (1621), though it is now heavily damaged and weathered. Another stele, “Stele of Commemoration,” was created in the 27th year of the Tự Đức era (1874).
