THIEN AN TEMPLE

Introduce

The temple's formal name is Thiên Ân Tự, commonly referred to as Thien An Temple. (According to village elders, the temple was originally a Buddhist pagoda where a monk once served as the abbot. Over time, the pagoda deteriorated, prompting the abbot to seek donations from the public for its restoration. However, he never returned, leaving the renovation unfinished. Therefore, the local people converted Thien An Pagoda into Thien An Temple. The temple’s roof still bears three engraved Chinese characters: “Thiên Ân Tự”).

Previously, the temple was in Yen Hoa Village. In the early reign of King Thieu Tri (1841), Yen Hoa was renamed Yen Phu under Thuong Commune, Vinh Thuan District. Today, the temple is situated at No. 145, Yen Phu Street, Yen Phu Ward, Tay Ho District, Hanoi.

From the centre of Hoan Kiem Lake, follow Trang Thi Street, Dien Bien Phu Street, Hoang Dieu Street, and Quan Thanh Street, then continue onto Thanh Nien Street. Upon reaching Yen Phu Slope, turn left into Yen Phu Street and proceed for approximately 3 kilometres. At No. 145 Yen Phu Street, turn right into a small alley of about 10 meters to arrive at the historical site.
