Linh Son Pagoda is also called Tao Sach Pagoda. Local people usually called it as Nhat Tan pagoda because the pagoda is located in Nhat Tan village, now is Nhat Tan ward, Tay Ho district, Hanoi.
Previously, the pagoda was located in the North East – South West direction. Now the pagoda is located in the North West – South East direction, overlooking the West Lake. In terms of feng shui, the pagoda is in the position of “Long chau ho phuc” which means in a high standing admiration. On the left side is Red river as the “Thanh Long” (blue dragon), to the right is Long Do Mountain as ‘’Bach Ho’’ (white tiger). Facing the Tran Bac Pagoda in the east, the Linh Son Pagoda in the west is also a beautiful temple. Nhat Tan is the home of peach blossoms, lotus flowers. The great scenery with peaches and lotus is truly the scene of Buddha land. In front of the pagoda, there is a hundred-year-old peach tree. The parallel sentences written on the pillars in front of the temple has partly described the beauty of the place of meditation.
Linh Son Pagoda was built in the Le dynasty. There is no exact data to specify which year the pagoda was built. For a long time, the pagoda was forgotten. By the end of Bao Dai’s reign, people rebuilt it with the current scale.
Linh Son Pagoda is typical of the thought of worshiping the Three Religions and worshiping ancestors. As a pagoda, the worship of Buddha is a must. The left side of the upper chamber worships Confucius. There are four large letters: “Sat ky so an” (carefully considered when you are in peace). When it is peaceful, when things go smoothly, people are thoughtless, not prevent, not to pay attention to themselves so it is difficult to avoid dangerous dangers. Confucius teaches people to think themselves, what they do not want, do not do it to others, do good deeds, give up evil, wherever, always be cautious with all your thoughts and actions.
Right in front of the shrine worship Lao Tzu. There are also four large letters on the top “Vo vi nhi tri”. Do not have to do anything but the nation is still have everything in place, everything is in its position, which is the thought of Taoist. In general, most of every pagodas have Jade Emperor statues. Jade Emperor in accordance with the Buddhist concept is the De Thich - master of heaven Dao Li dominated 33 heavens. When Shakyamuni came, Jade Emperor came to welcome Shakyamuni to the teaching of the Buddha. When Buddha was about to enter Nirvana he also came down to show sadness. According to the Brahminical practice of Buddhism, the Jade Emperor promise to the Buddha that he will often support the Three Jewels. Therefore, Jade Emperor regularly appears to try the virtues of the Bodhisattvas and Shakyamuni, who also often support them.
Thus, the Jade Emperor is worshipping at the pagoda is to help the Buddha, the Dharma, the Sangha. Actually in Vietnam pagodas and especially Linh Son Pagoda worship Ngoc Hoang is not that simple. Jade Emperor is the supreme god who looks on the three worlds: the upper world, the middle and the underworld. Jade Emperor is the master of all gods. Through the gods, the Jade Emperor can bless each house, each person. Through the Jade Emperor, one can condemn evil-doers. Jade Emperor is the supreme god of folk and Taoist beliefs. The Jade Emperor in Linh Son Pagoda is the supreme god of the Three Religions and of folk beliefs. Two rows in the temple in part express this idea.
Doing good to accumulate virtue, Linh Son Pagoda is the foundation of Hoa Nghiem association. The association consists of the good men and women of Nhat Tan and all other places with the same goodness of compassionate mind: Hoa Nghiem chanting, do good, accumulate virtue. The devotees worship, learn and follow the Bodhisattva, a great Bodhisattva born when Shakyamuni entered Nirvana but Maitreya has not yet emerged. Bodhisattva in the region, but always observe the basis of beings, the teachings of beings,, deep silence contains secret so called Dai Tang. Bodhisattva vow to save all sentient beings in the Six Paths and then become a Buddha. Bodhisattva appears in the heavens, human realms and hell with a round head, holding the precious pearl, hand holding the staff.
In the tower area of Linh Son Pagoda features stone sculpture of Bodhisattva. Unfortunately one hand has been broken. We can restore it following the image of the handle of the pearl and staff as above. In the pagoda, there is a tablet written the purposes, the rules of the association, name of family members whom are members of the association. Especially, there is a tablet “Bai ky bia ky niem Chua Linh Son” (The memorial tablet of Linh Son Pagoda) is about the history of the temple.
The special value of Taoist Pagoda is unique in art architecture. The pagoda is a type of ancient Chinese character ”丁”, a religious architecture. But on the architectural frame is added new blocks of decoration such as two walls at the front and back wall. New decorations are also present in the ancient imperial architecture of Hue and in ancient architecture of XIX century Hoi An. This is the meeting of two Chinese-Vietnamese nineteenth century cultures. The art of shaping has brought together influences in the country. This is a selective acquisition of the essence of world culture. Ancient artisans have selected new art forms suitable for the country to create a unique culture, contributing to the richness of Vietnamese art. This acquisition makes the architecture add value, creating the relief of the monument that admires attention to visitors to the temple.
