Introduce
Van Nien Pagoda is an ancient pagoda used to be called Van Tue is located in Ve Ho village, Xuan La ward, Tay Ho district, Hanoi.
Van Nien Pagoda - the name itself has confirmed the longevity of the monument in the history of national defense and long-term building of our nation. Overcoming the harsh challenges of nature, the war, fire, the pagoda was closely linked with the cultural life of the local people, Thang Long Hanoi. Over time, the historical content and value of the relics are also accumulating, enriching to become a valuable legacy in the cultural treasure of the country.
Local folklore and historical records indicate that Van Nien Pagoda was built in the Ly dynasty (11th century).
There is a sentence in “Thang Long co tich khao”: "The pagoda on the west bank of West Lake, formerly called Van Tue Pagoda, now called Van Nien. The pagoda is located in Quan La hamlet. Ly Thuan Thien in 1014, Huu Nhai monk set up the forum here. Then the famous monk Lam Tue Sinh, Thao Duong in the Ly Dynasty inherited the abbot here.
The humble Van Nien Pagoda is located on Lac Long Quan Street overlooking West Lake. The scale is not large, but the pagoda is located under the luxuriant groves, so can also be considered as a forest pagoda. The pagoda consists of 5 chanting lanes and three chambers connected to each other. The pagoda was repaired several times. There are sentences in the stone column of the house that describe this.
The layout of Van Nien Pagoda is like other pagodas. In the highest position is the Buddha, below is Amitabha Buddha, then the Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, and outside is the newborn Shakyamuni statue.
At present, Van Nien Pagoda also preserves architectural material blocks and collections of valuable historical and artistic objects. It is scientific evidence to predict the pagoda's construction date and contribute to the assessment of the true value of the monument. The typical relics of the pagoda include: the ancient walls of the main pagoda built of bricks (typical materials of the Ly); 46 statues (including 26 statues of Buddha, 20 mother and ancestor statues); two bells from the Nguyen dynasty, 11 deities and many other goods. For many years this monument has always been cherished, preserved, renovated and embellished on a spacious.
The pagoda was classified by the State Historical Cultural Center on February 13, 1996.
