Introduce
Doan Thi Diem’s grave belongs to 7 Phu Thuong ward, Tay Ho district, Hanoi.
Doan Thi Diem (1705-1748), the daughter of Doan Doan Nghi, from Trung Phu village, was called Gia Yen village, Giai Pham commune, Yen My district, Hung Yen province. Her mother is from the Vu family in Ha Khau ward now Hang Buom Ward, Hanoi.
Ever since she was a child, she was famous and talented and the Thang Long folklore still left many anecdotal evidence of her clever and humorous response through contact with the Chinese ambassador, Quynh, Dang Tran Con, Dr. Nhu Dinh Toan, Dr. Nguyen Cong Thai, etc.
Mrs. Diem was not only a talented poet but also a "divergent color, gesture, cultural words, behaved manner" so the rumors spread throughout the city and the town. At the same time, she was also a talented housewife. Not too long that many people want to marry her. She often did poetry and parallel sentences with her father and brother.
Mrs Diem was so good that Lord Trinh brought her into the palace to teach the maids. She was added by the Trinh Lord letter "Ngoc" to be Doan Thi Ngoc Diem, but because of fear of the authority of the Lord that the words in her books still signify Doan Thi Diem.
One time Dang Tran Con, who praised her poetry tales, made a poem for her, she finished laughing and penned the poem “this does not worth to comment”. Dang Tran Con is ashamed of his steep grades and later studies to become a famous person.
When she was in Chuong Duong (near the capital), one thing happened, thanks to the wise mind she was not harmed: Previously there was a sibling of Lord Trịnh Giang many times bringing goods to ask her to be concubine but she refused to accept the goods. Hearing that she was near the capital, he ordered the soldiers carrying her to the palace in Thang Long. That day she was teaching, a little student looked out of the door and saw the delegation coming forward so ran to tell her. She understood immediately that the man intended to use the lord Trinh bullying as an excuse to take her away so she told her students to sit naturally, not to be noisy, disorderly, when people asked just say she went to pick up something in the morning but had not come back yet. She rushed into the house to take off her dress and wear mud and plaster on both hands and feet. She put on a square scarf and an old hat, the handle of the water bucket digging out the door but no one knew it was her, the other students also did not recognize. She went off the field to escape to another village, Trinh Giang’s siblings scurried around the house and neighbors did not see her so they had to leave. Later, he knew that she did not want to be a concubine so he admired her and did not dare to use power to force her anymore.
Mrs. Diem is a talented woman but her life is quite hard. When she was 25 years old, her father died, she was staying with her mother and helping her brother but not long after he also passed away and leaving small children behind. She had to teach and sell medicine to feed her mother and help her sister-in-law raise children. Her students were quite successful, including Dao Duy Doan as doctor, her niece Doan Le Khuong, who she later taught later became a famous woman in the Thang Long
But it was until she was 37 years old that Nguyen Kieu came to ask Mrs. Kieu to be his wife. He came from Phu Xa village, born in 1695, passed the doctorate at the age of 21 years in the 11th year of Le Tham Thinh (1715). After his doctorate, he was Do Ngu Su, he and Nguyen Tong Khue paraded in 1721 wrote the book Su hoa tung vinh. He and his doctorate Vu Kham Lan in 1727 wrote about the Kinh Dich. His first wife is Le Thi Hang, the daughter of Le Anh Tuan, who died early and had no children. His next wife, Doa had two sons and a daughter and died at the age of 20. He found no one was worthy so he chose Ms. Diem to be his wife, she has refused many times, the excuse that she did not want to get married but wanted to be at home with her mother. Later she accepted the marriage proposal. She was staying with Mr. Kieu for several months, and in the year Nham Tuat (1742), Kieu went to the Qing dynasty. He was the chief minister of the delegation. It was during this time that she had to live in a desperate situation, the loneliness of the married woman was no different to the battle, the death was firm in hand. In the midst of that, she received a copy of "Chinh Phu Ngam" in Chinese characters of Dang Tran Con handwritten to her so she was immediately inspired and made the Vietnamese translation of it.
Three years later Mr. Kieu went to the Qing Dynasty, he saw the translation of his wife's "Chinh Phu Ngam". The couple made love poetry very similar to poetry. Kieu reunited with her for three years in 1748 he was promoted to the town of Nghe An, he brought his family together. One day, on the boat to Cat Street, she said to stop to visit Song temple - where worshiping Princess Lieu Hanh. That night, Mrs Diem slept under a boat in Cat Street, unfortunately she had a cold but still did not want her husband to worry about her. Mr. Kieu very much sought to treat her but the disease is still not relieved. She died on September 11, the year of the Thinh (1748) at age 44, her body was taken to her husband's home in Phu Xa village, Phu Thuong commune (now Phu Thuong ward, Tay Ho district).
Doan Thi Diem is a glorified Vietnamese poet who is also a bright example of a middle-aged woman. Speaking of Doan Thi Diem is the translator of the book "Chinh Phu Ngam" - works written in ancient Han, so that all classes of people in the society are easy to understand, easy to feel. There are quite a lot of writers tried to translate but no one is more successful than Doan Thi Diem, she has described all the main content of the book "Chinh Phu Ngam" expressed the feelings of women (also is the mood of her point with husband to fight to defend the throne of the king). The work was a resounding success in the literature of the late 18th century. The masterpiece "Chinh Phu Ngam" has left the Vietnamese literary treasure a great volume and quality of lyric poetry. "Chinh Phu Ngam" is a lyrical work depicting the whole of a woman's life during her husband's death. The sadness and pain of the couple's happiness spring to be turned away, but also optimistic hope in the name of the husband. The essence of the work "Chinh Phu Ngam" is still the voice condemning feudal feudalism, the right to life for human beings. The work is very successful in describing the rich and dynamic moods in the context of space and time. The translator has used the poetic form of poetry as a translation, the principle of melody merges with the sadness of the wife, the use of subtle language, the art of love description, and the scene with the mix harmonically.
It can be said that along with Kieu's story of Nguyen Du, the translation of "Chinh Phu Ngam" is a standard in the use of ethnic languages and foreign literature, forever worthy of the generation of imitation and learning. "Chinh Phu Ngam" with the artistic interpretation of Doan Thi Diem made the work to the peak of lyrical poetry (XVIII century), the essence of cultural products occupy a special place in the treasure of cultural heritage of the country.
