Introduce
Since ancient times, West Lake is a famous landmark of Thang Long - Hanoi. This place is home to many historical and cultural relics. Kim Lien Pagoda in Nghi Tam village, Quang An ward is one of the valuable relics of this area. Kim Lien pagoda is located in a great position, surrounded by water, facing West Lake, back to Yen Phu dike, on the left is Thang Loi hotel, on the right is Nghi Tam village with traditional landscaping and growing goldfish.
Kim Lien Pagoda is a place of worship and commemoration of the princess Tu Hoa, a virtuous person who helped to breed Silkworm back in the reign of Ly Than Tong (1128 - 1138).
The pagoda is located on Ngu Dai - a high mound in Nghi Tam village, Quang An ward, Tay Ho district. This mound of Tay Ho people still called Hành Cung mound or mound Cung. This name is called history because Ly Thanh Tong for the construction of Quan Ngu (seeing fish) here. Then Princess Tu Hoa - daughter of King Ly Than Tong applied to open a new silkworm mulberry farm, Tam Tang, established from the Tu Hoa palace on this land. In the Tran dynasty, Tam Tang was renamed Tich Ma camp, then Tich Ma ward. At the end of the Tran Dynasty, from the old foundation of the palace, local people established a pagods called Dong Long Pagoda. The Le Dynasty changed Tich Ma ward to become Nghi Tam ward. At that time, the temple was renamed Dai Bi Pagoda.
In 1770, Trinh Sam restored the pagoda and then renamed it into Kim Lien Pagoda.
In 1792, the pagoda was once again restored.
In the 20th year of Tu Duc's reign (1867), local people restored, carving tablet recorded this great event.
The peculiarity of the pagoda is its unique artistic architecture. The pagoda is made in the style of Chinese character “Tam”, which is a traditional religious architecture. In the northern part of the country, there are only two places still have this style, Kim Lien Pagoda and Tay Phuong Pagoda. The temple has a matched roof, two floor eight roof, with antique tile roof, there are round windows on every walls in the Buddhist style. Particularly decorative motifs on the architecture are presented with rich and varied themes such as bamboo, phoenix, cloud, corn, drum and one that stand out is the lotus flower blooming on the water which is very refined and lively, the technique of carving here reached a very high level of skill.
The pagoda has kept the only court of the North of our country as "Tam Son – Tu Tru" (3 mountains – 4 pillars). This is the inheritance and promotion of the art of previous generations to be used and put in place. The architectural style of the temple is in the complete art of the Le Trinh period, reflecting the development of national art history.
Through the three-arched-entrances gate is a garden of flowers blooming all four seasons, through the brick yard to the main pagoda, a whole of architectural works are built in the style of Chinese character “tam” which external wall linked into the shape of a rectangular.
The architecture of the pagoda includes the upper pagoda, the middle pagoda, the lower pagoda which are built harmoniously, It is especially successful in the transition of each building is very clever that give us the feeling that the whole temple is an architectural system with a lot of buildings, not distinction of each other or separated by its inherent function. From a distance, Kim Lien Pagoda has the architecture of three horizontal axis, symbolizing the harmony Heaven - Earth - People. With the technique of building and paving the carpentry, moreover, the round door of the "Sac - Khong" wheel, Kim Lien pagoda suggest a sense of the mysterious meaning of the Zen mantras, universal beings. The architectural style of the Kim Lien Pagoda is consistent with the style of the husbandry, with neat and clean details... The lotus pattern in decorative designs convey the abstract philosophical ideas of Buddhism. The most impressive art is the statue of a lotus flower rising high above the West Lake, which is believed to guide us to be a better person.
The temple has a abundant system of Buddha statues consisting of 50 statues, notably Tu Hoa princess and Trinh lords statues. Tu Hoa rincess statue was created to commemorate the merits of a woman who taught people how to grow strawberries, raise silkworms, and weave silk. This noble profession was passed down by our ancestors - Nguyen Phi Y Lan.

The collection of relics of the temple is still rare in the treasure of cultural heritage of the country. The statues of the pagoda are made up of round statues of high artistic value. The works here are truly works of fine art, reflecting a sophisticated technique and skillful hands of his father. Especially in the pagoda there is a statue, "according to some historians, the study of the statue said it is the statue of Lord Trinh Giang. Kim Lien Pagoda is famous for being one of the most beautiful pagodas in Hanoi.
