Tây Hồ Pagoda, also known as “Phổ Linh Tự” (Phổ Linh Pagoda), is situated by West Lake. Phổ Linh Pagoda is next to Tây Hồ Palace in Quảng An Ward, Tây Hồ District.
Based on the inscriptions on stone steles and bells preserved at the pagoda, Phổ Linh Pagoda was constructed during the Lý dynasty. According to the “Phổ Linh Tự Bi” stele, dated the 4th year of Vĩnh Tộ (1622), currently housed in the pagoda, it states: “In Tây Hồ Ward, Quảng Đức District, there is a renowned scenic site known as Phổ Linh, which has been around for quite some time. The surrounding landscape is stunning, with a large lake in front, Trấn Vũ Shrine ahead, Tây Hồ Palace to the west, and Quảng Bá to the north. Here, the essence of sacred energy converges and circulates throughout the land and sky. In minor concerns, it manifests in all things; in great matters, it is evident in the talents of humankind. Indeed, it is the foremost beautiful, renowned site in the country. The grand temple has golden pavilions, precious halls, and towering structures with gorgeous and magnificent carvings. The Buddha sculptures depict the Three Bodies of the Buddhas sitting on a luminous jewelled throne. Majestic buildings loom towering, conveying a solemn grandeur transcending the mundane realm of the three thousand worlds. All prayers and wishes find their divine response in this sacred place. However, through the ravages of war and time, the pillars were battered by wind and rain, and the revered statues were eroded by water. Who could stay motionless in the face of such devastation without feeling sadness for the temple’s sanctity? Moved by compassion and dedication, the ward authorities, inspired by their good souls, contributed funds and selected skilled artisans. On the 16th day of the 10th lunar month in the year Mậu Ngọ (1618), they restored the Buddha statues, organized the monks’ quarters, and extended the temple beyond its former grandeur”.
Tây Hồ Pagoda was renovated in the 4th year of Vĩnh Tộ (1622), the 17th year of Chính Hòa (1696), and the 3rd year of Cảnh Thịnh (1795). The pagoda has been further expanded and refurbished recently, becoming more spacious and magnificent. It is built in the “nội công ngoại quốc” architectural style on a “golden turtle” mound, comprising the three-entrance gate, front hall, Buddha hall, patriarch hall, Mother Goddess hall, and the monastic quarters, among other structures.
