As we know, Buddhism is a world religion originating in India, initiated by Shakyamuni and spread to many countries in the world, including Vietnam. Its spread has led Buddhism to evolve into many different sects, including the Vajrayana sect that flourished in our country during the Ly dynasty. In the early years of Buddhism, Buddhism was spreading and flourishing in Vietnam. Since then Buddhism combined with other indigenous religions existed to date. On the road that developed a series of pagodas built by the feudal regime, besides the temple of the village built by the people to worship their Buddhist religion. Among them, Mat Dung pagoda still today is a lucky for learning the contents of the Buddhist architecture of the village, the Vietnamese in general and the people living by handicraft industry around Thang Long (old name of Hanoi) in particular.
Mat Dung pagoda as its name and development has confirmed the property is an architectural monument. The pagoda is located in a high, spacious and flat area in the residence area of the ancient East Village, facing the Thuy Khue Road. The space of the pagoda is fairly spacious, including a three-arched-entrances gate, brick courtyard, the main pagoda, an ancestor altar house and a large garden.
Three-arched-entrances pagodas were built similar to those in temples in Nguyen Dynasty. The main pagoda is made up of the word "cong" which consists of front house, incense burner.
Like the other pagodas, the decoration of the statues of Buddha in Mat Dung pagoda has strictly adhered to the rules of a Mahayana Buddha in our country. The main statues are concentrated into blocks of several layers from the back to the front. At the highest position near the wall in the back is Three Jewels sitting on the lotus, hands clenched. The second class consists of large Amitābha, the two sides are the statue of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva and the Great Mind Bodhisattva. The third is the Buddha statues coming to Nirvana, the two are the Bodhisattva and Enlightened Brahma on the back of the Master and the white elephant as we often see. The statue of Buddha Nirvana is rarely seen in the temple Mahayana in the north, it is mainly located in the Vajrayana Buddhas. The presence of this statue can be consider as the image of Mat Dung pagoda.
After the Buddha statue in Nirvana is the Maitreya, the two sides are a Bodhisattva and the Jade Emperor.
Finally, there are the Nine dragon statues, the Plough and the Crux (stars).
On the two sides of the harem there are two Bodhisattvas. Out of the house, the incense burners are two rows of statues The ten Pluto - the supreme representative of the forestry court. Finally, there are other statues at the front house.
Today, there are four wooden relics and two pairs of parallel sentences in Chinese characters, two poems and four doors. Most relics, parallel sentences, doors are all made of lacquered wood, all of which are dated by the Nguyen dynasty in the late 19th century and early 20th century.
The bell “Mat Dung hong chung” made in 1794 is a great relic not only because it is a cultural relic of the Tay Son period, but also in terms of art, it carries the opening value for the existence of bells in the Nguyen Dynasty. In 1823, the pagoda was renovated, built a bell tower and repainted Buddha statue.
